Generally the title of the painting is what kinda spawns the painting in my head, so I can see the idea . . . see the whole concept of the painting from the title.
So, on this particular painting Who’s Got This Round? . . .The idea of it when I heard it . . . of course it was a buddy of mine sitting at the bar who said, ‘Okay so who’s got this round?’
I just pictured this like round coming into play. Then I pictured all these people doing different types of drinks. And as I got into painting it, I thought instead of doing just all mixed drinks around. Why don’t I do all martini drinkers on the bottom? And that way you could turn it. And if you were going to have a wine night at your house you could turn it to just the wine.
Or if you were going to have martinis, you could have it with just the martinis. If it was a mixer you would have all. And then you’d have beer up here.
It just evolved. When painting, because I have the idea done, doesn’t mean it has to be by the book, and this is it. You know I’m not very strict about it. If I start painting and I get in the middle of the painting and I get an idea to do something crazier with it. I’ll just go with it. Because I have a very big freedom with what I do – to do what ever I want to do. I’m not restricted by any rules.
That’s the goal of any artist to be able to have creative freedom. And now that I’m at 100% creative freedom, anything I do I have to take full responsibility for because I have no excuse!
